KMSKA LATE - Bruiklenen in the picture: Marlene Dumas

Category:

Nocturne

Date:

24 April 2025 from 20:00 to 21:00
Marlene Dumas is one of the most influential contemporary artists. Her powerful, expressive portraits dig deep into the human psyche and confront the viewer with themes of power, vulnerability and desire. During this evening we will dive into her world, where art history, photography and social issues intersect.

Within our series “Bruiklenen in the picture,” we highlight exceptional works that are temporarily part of our collection. Dumas' work, shown in this context, is known for her paintings of human figures in a drawing-like, expressionist style. With a sophisticated play of light and dark and a transparent application of paint, she evokes a sense of proximity as well as distance. Her work, often based on mass media photographs or her own Polaroids, poses questions about representation, identity and the female nude within art history.

How does it feel as a female artist to hang among a predominantly male art canon? How does figuration relate to abstraction? And what influence did photography have on her oeuvre? During KMSKA LAAT, experts and collectors will take you into Dumas' universe.
