Ilse D’Hollander (1968–1997) was dedicated to painting. Her love of paint is evident in her almost tangible brushstrokes and colour palette.
The Belgian artist toyed with abstraction yet always remained grounded in reality. With a sharp and analytical eye, she examined what she saw. Yet more than just concentrated observation, painting was for her a way of thinking and of being.
In this retrospective exhibition, the KMSKA shows how D’Hollander explores the boundaries of reality. The exhibition brings together her paintings and drawings in an intuitive pursuit, just as hesitant and unpretentious as D’Hollander herself.
