KMSKA LATE - Book presentation Marianne Van Vyve

Category:

Talk

Date:

12 February 2026 from 20:00 to 21:00
Marianne Van Vyve (1943–1991) was a Belgian artist who lived and worked in Antwerp, her birthplace, where she also completed her studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Van Vyve never aligned herself with a specific artistic movement. Instead, she consistently developed her own visual language, often in opposition to the dominant trends of her time. Her work captures an inner, emotional landscape that emerged within the intimacy of her studio.

Throughout her career, she combined her artistic practice with raising her daughter as a single mother. Van Vyve could rely on the support of a close-knit group of committed collectors. She was also one of the few female artists represented by Galerie De Zwarte Panter, where she held her first solo exhibition in 1979. Her early death, however, prevented broader institutional recognition of her work.

This monograph explores the intriguing work of Marianne Van Vyve, examines the influence of her academic training, and traces her remarkable development as a painter. The book reassesses her as a powerful female artist within a broader art-historical context.

During the book presentation, Liesje Vandenbroeck will be in conversation with Delphine Cool, art historian and daughter of Marianne Van Vyve, about the publication and Van Vyve’s artistic practice.

Marianne Van Vyve was published by Mercatorfonds and includes texts by Delphine Cool, Jennifer Higgie, Sam Plompen, Barbara Stehle, and Dennis Van Mol.
