KMSKA LATE - Ika Schwander - Magritte

Category:

Performance
Visual solo performance by Ika Schwander, created especially for KMSKA, about the suicide of Magritte's mother.

The mother of surrealist artist René Magritte committed suicide in 1912 by drowning herself in the River Sambre. She was found with her face covered by a cloth, which left a deep impression on the young Magritte. This traumatic incident is seen as the inspiration for many of his later works, particularly those featuring faces hidden behind a cloth, such as in the painting The Lovers.
