How gameplay enhances the museum experience

For several months now, visitors have been able to take part in an interactive escape game at the museum: Museum Mysteries. This playful experience, developed in collaboration with Loconsilio Game Design, aims to actively engage visitors with the collection and the museum building.
Museum Mysteries is an alternative way to experience the KMSKA, aligning with the museum’s broader ambition to make its collection more interactive and accessible.
A playful layer was added to the museum visit.
This means that visitors are no longer just observers—they become active participants. The game encourages discovery, collaboration, and a closer look at artworks that might otherwise go unnoticed. At the same time, the introduction of this type of experience required careful integration to ensure it blends seamlessly with the museum environment and does not disturb other visitors.
Loconsilio Game Design is responsible for the concept, game structure, and technical execution. Greenpoint supported Loconsilio in communication during development and launch. In collaboration with KMSKA, the game was designed to be intuitive, easy to follow throughout the building, and playful while remaining educational. From a hospitality perspective, attention was given to wayfinding, avoiding long wait times, and ensuring that the game can be played in groups without disrupting other visitors.
In practical terms, you play in a group of up to four detectives, searching for the thief who has stolen a fictional artwork from the KMSKA. Using your own smartphone or tablet, you receive clues and codes hidden in various artworks to solve the mystery. All answers are entered into the platform, and at the end, you receive a score. The game is suitable for players aged 14 and up, with adult supervision recommended.
The mystery is far from solved
The development and implementation of the game required coordination between multiple departments, including visitor services, IT, hospitality, and accounting. After extensive internal testing, the game was launched and offered for a three-month trial period. Following a recent positive evaluation, Museum Mysteries has now become a permanent part of the museum’s offering.
These types of initiatives are the future of museum hospitality. They allow us to keep innovating, while staying true to our core mission: being a place where art, stories, and people meet.
For self-declared detectives and big thinkers, Museum Mysteries is available every day.
