Abraham Grapheus
Cornelis de Vos
A powerful portrait. That is the least you can say of this Abraham Grapheus. He seems disturbed by something happening out of the picture. His unbuttoned millstone collar hangs backwards. Yet he is otherwise in full uniform, laden with a suit of armour of guild plates attached to each other. As 'knaep' or servant of the guild, he takes on numerous functions from the mid-1580s onwards. He is just as active as a caretaker, bookkeeper, clerk, cashier and messenger. Grapheus also excels in another role: that of model. Jacques Jordaens for example used him remarkably often for anatomical studies and study heads, which he would fit into his paintings. Here it is a fully-fledged portrait. In sparse brushwork and hyper-realistic details, Cornelis de Vos creates a true-to-life image of a very real man. Ready to step out of the painting.
