KMSKA LATE - Scent Workshop - The Brothel Scene

19 November 2026 from 20:00 to 20:30

What does a painting smell like? During KMSKA LATE, you will quite literally step inside Joachim Beuckelaer’s Brothel Scene. Using your sense of smell, discover details that your eyes might otherwise overlook.
In this olfactory workshop, Antje Kiewell, founder and director of the scent design agency Artphilia, invites us to experience four different scents: from a bowl of porridge to a bold interpretation of desire, and even a cage that remains strikingly empty. Which scent belongs where in the painting? What does it reveal about the figures, their gazes and their hidden stories? And can a scent make us complicit in what we see?
Two of the scents were created especially for this painting by the Spanish perfumer Augustí Vidal.
Each workshop begins with a short introduction by Veerle De Meester, KMSKA’s Exhibition Manager. This is followed by an interactive session in front of the painting itself. At the end, we unveil the scent installation, which you can then experience at your own pace.
