KMSKA LATE - Sjostakovitsj, Prokofjev & Fauré x Zadkine
Category:
Date:

What happens when Sjostakovitsj’s music meets Zadkine’s sculptures? Five musicians from the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra will find out on 29 October, right in the heart of the museum. Music and sculpture enter into a compelling dialogue.
Sjostakovitsj composed his Chamber Symphony in just three days, in the war-ravaged city of Dresden. It is raw, intensely personal music about suffering, memory and oppression. You hear jagged rhythms and abrasive harmonies, but also moments of silence in which you hardly dare to breathe.
It is no coincidence that this musical language resonates so closely with Ossip Zadkine’s visual oeuvre. He fragmented the human figure in bronze and stone, with The Destroyed City standing as a haunting symbol of loss and destruction. Sjostakovitsj does with notes what Zadkine did with chisel and bronze: he makes the wounds of the twentieth century tangible.
The programme also includes Prokofjev’s sharp and playful Sonata for Two Violins and Fauré’s Pavane, a brief yet intoxicating work of French melancholy. Zadkine lived between his Eastern European roots and the artistic milieu of Paris, and those two worlds come together beautifully in this programme.
You do not need to be an expert. Come and listen, look around, and allow yourself to be moved.
