What can art mean for a place and the people who live there?

With Théâtre Source, Belgian artist Philip Aguirre y Otegui realized a monumental artistic and social project in Ndogpassi, a neighborhood of Douala, Cameroon. An amphitheatre was built around a natural water source that serves both as a washing place and a meeting point. Here, art, architecture and everyday life quite literally come together.

Filmmaker Koen Van den Bril documented the creation of Théâtre Source and the social process behind the project. His documentary of the same name (2015) shows how the artwork came into being and highlights its significance for the local community.

During KMSKA LATE, we will screen this documentary. Afterwards, Philip Aguirre y Otegui and Koen Van den Bril will take part in a short conversation about the origins of Théâtre Source, the collaboration with the local community, and the relationship between art, architecture and social engagement.
