The restoration project The Enthroned Madonna has been successfully completed and will be followed by a new endeavor: the restoration of The Adoration of the Magi. The two works will temporarily switch places, while the restoration furniture and infrastructure will remain in the same location. We anticipate new challenges, which the public will once again be able to follow closely.

The Adoration is painted on panel, whereas the Madonna was painted on canvas. Measuring 447 × 336 cm, The Adoration is smaller, but significantly heavier, around 600 kg. The easel supporting the work during the restoration is being specially adapted to bear its weight.

This restoration once again offers a unique opportunity to study Rubens’ creative process up close through technical and material research and simply by observing the restoration work itself. We may even be able to answer the intriguing question: did Rubens really paint this entire work himself in just two weeks? Is that even possible?

To restore The Adoration of the Magi to its former glory, conservators and researchers have been working intensively for months on an impressive scaffold. Visitors can follow the restoration process from a short distance. Prior to the restoration, the KMSKA’s collection research team, in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, is conducting a thorough investigation.
