A debate on art criticism. Does true criticism still exist today, or is it quietly dying? In what form does it manifest most effectively now?
Eric Rinckhout, freelance editor and curator, will engage in conversation with the rising voices of the performing arts magazine E-tcetera. Also joining the discussion is Trigger, the magazine of the Fotomuseum. Trigger does not practice traditional art criticism, and it is precisely in that approach that it seeks to create tension.

Art criticism is a bourgeois concept; it relies on the free practice of art, a free market for art, unbounded taste, and a daunting anonymity of action in order to emerge and flourish. The critic is one of those typically 19th-century constructs—a variant of the flâneur and the dandy, the quintessential incarnation of the “man in the crowd.” A peculiar mixture of the will to believe and biting disbelief. A tragicomic double bind of ambition and triviality.
