KMSKA LATE - MANA
Category:
Date:

MANA is a solo dance performance by Laura Daelemans in collaboration with the Belgian wind ensemble I SOLISTI. Daelemans drew her inspiration for MANA from the true story of Cathelyne van den Bulcke, the last woman to be burned as a witch on the Grote Markt in Lier. Thanks to her courage during the torture, refusing to betray other women, the witch trials in the city of Lier came to an end.
Daelemans created three large illustrations based on Cathelyne’s life story, which were then animated by visual artist Noura Marien. Benjamin Van Esser and Seppe Indigne composed new music for MANA, performed by Jelmer De Moed on (bass) clarinet and Seppe Indigne with live electronics. Daelemans created the choreography and performs it live while the animated images glide over her body like moving tattoos. The overall effect evokes a sense of oppression, simulating Cathelyne’s emotional journey.
