Around twenty copies of Pieter Bruegel’s famous painting of proverbs in Berlin are still known today. The KMSKA holds one painted by his eldest son, Pieter Brueghel II.
The painting is currently being restored at the museum, ready to shine once again in spring 2027 in our exhibition ‘Beyond Words. Bruegel and Proverbs in Art’.
On Science Day, you’re invited into the conservation studio, where Samuel Mareel, curator of the exhibition, will explain why Brueghel’s Proverbs have remained so popular and influential, and what the many copies can teach us about the original.
