Why does a brilliant red pigment turn grey over time? In the KMSKA’s Rubens Gallery, conservators are examining the monumental altarpiece Adoration of the Magi. For King Melchior’s red cloak, Rubens used vermilion, a vivid red pigment that has changed colour over the years.
Together with researchers from the University of Antwerp, the conservators are investigating how best to treat and protect this fragile paint layer. On Science Day, conservator Jantine Maessen-den Brok will explain and demonstrate how art and science come together in caring for Rubens’s masterpiece.
